Good morning to the honourable judges, teachers, and students. I am Chang Sze Ching

from 1 Zhong, and my topic for today is “A caring society starts with a caring individual.”

In one's mind, a caring society draws up the image of people showing mutual respect

and being willing to help each other. Our society is full of different and unique individuals

who behave differently, and not everyone is capable or willing to help others. Building a

caring community requires the effort of everyone. However, it is not within our control over

how someone else acts. What we can control is our behaviour and attitude toward others.

Therefore, instead of focusing on others, we should focus on ourselves and how we can help

            the people around us.

We can start by treating everyone with equal dignity and respect. Since childhood,

we’ve been taught to respect others, but have we truly practiced these morals? Do we really

not have any biased view toward other religions, races or gender? Respecting others means

we accept them for who they are even though they’re different from us. One of the best ways

to show respect is to listen. Listen to what the person is trying to say. Sometimes, you may

not understand what that person is trying to express. But respecting them by listening to
their words might mean a lot for them. It may not be anything to you, but it could be

everything for them. Showing respect to others builds feelings of trust. At the same time, it
establishes racial harmony and diversity, thus creating a united society.

Next, although we should give what we can, we should not expect anything in return.

The expectations of getting something in return cause more stress than joy. They mar the act

of giving, which makes us feel slightly guilty, and they lead to disappointment if the person

we helped doesn’t return the kindness. However,.
